Aetheria – Chapter 13 & Epilogue

Chapter 13 – Hymnen

“Remember you once asked me why I decided to join you?” Zakura’s voice rang inside Setsura’s ear and Zakura’s figure was standing in front of her.

“That’s because you reminded me of that young master of mine,” Zakura smiled as she turned her back and walked away from Setsura. Her shadowy figure began to turn hazy and disappeared from Setsura’s sight.

“Zakura…” Tears were formed around Setsura’s eyes as she muttered Zakura’s name, almost forgetting her current dying state.

Blood oozed out from her stomach like a fountain and dyed her dress red. I am sorry… It is entirely my fault… Setsura continued to mourn.

“Setsura…” Lucianus dilated his eyes, unable to believe the scene that happened right before his eyes.

If he was faster, he could have prevented it. Lucianus blamed himself as he clutched his fist; his emotion began to run wild.

“… Aria… Aria… Aria!!” Lucianus shouted for Aria repetitively in a savage manner, tears could be seen coming out from his eyes.

As wrath and woe feed through his mind, Lucianus released his final shackle on holding himself back, evolving into his true form.

His eyes turned crimson red along with his hair while claws started to grow through his finger nails. As his humanoid looks gradually decayed to make way for his beast form, a pair of fiery red wings plunged out from his back.

Disappearing himself in a strong blaze which engulfed his entire body, a sharp cry could be heard coming within the fire, followed by the appearance of a huge bird, where its body continued to burn endlessly.

That was Lucianus’s true form, a phoenix.

The phoenix gave out a loud cry again and it rushed towards Aria like a lunatic.

Alerted by the safety of its master, the Nidhogg flew in between of Aria and the phoenix, using its body as a meat shield.

However, the Nidhogg’s resistance was futile when the sharp beak of the phoenix tore through the thick-skinned Nidhogg, forming a huge hole on the Nidhogg’s body, instantly killing it.

As the phoenix broke through the Nidhogg’s defence, it continued to rush to Aria in lightning speed without any hesitation.

The wild-like behaviour of the phoenix did not scare Aria and she opened her arms with a smile on her face, welcoming the attack.

In an instant, Aria’s body was penetrated through her heart and Lucianus returned to its humanoid form with his arm inside her chest, crushing her heart.

“Thank… you…” Aria muttered softly as she gave out the warm smile that Lucianus was once so familiar with.

Closing her eyes, Aria fell to the ground on her back. Somehow, her looks seemed peaceful and satisfied at the ending that befell her.

In fast forward pace, memories of Aria ran through Lucianus’s mind, every single one of them including the one where he had to sacrifice his very own flying ability to keep Aria sealed in place.

“Sleep well, Aria…” He muttered mournfully but there was something else keeping his attention away.

“Setsura..!” Turning his back, Lucianus ran to Setsura’s side immediately.

“Setsura, Setsura!” Calling her name crazily, Lucianus held on to Setsura’s head, trying to keep her in conscious. One by one, his tears dripped onto Setsura’s face.

“Luci…” Struggling to keep herself awake, she smiled at Lucianus. She was glad that Lucianus was not hurt from the battle.

“Don’t worry, you’ll be fine. Just give me a few seconds,” Lucianus’s voice was quavering heavily.

“It’s too late, Luci,” Setsura shook her head slowly. At her current state, she could barely even move her body anymore.

“Tell me honestly… Is what you said in the lake true…? Do you really wish me to be away from you…?” Setsura’s heart ached when she thought about it, stream of tears leaked down her eyes.

“No, I don’t want you to be away from me,” Lucianus shook his head.

“If I could, I would want to stay with you forever, even if it meant to be selfish,” Lucianus caressed Setsura’s pale cheeks; he knew Setsura will not last any longer.

“Setsura, promise me one thing will you? Whatever happens from now on, never let them affect you and continue to live on strongly,” Despite Lucianus’s weird usages of words in his beg, he was responded by a weak nod from Setsura.

“Heedest me, ethereal beings; praisest me, immortal sun. With mine offer, whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath power to bestoweth life; and he wilt grantest this wish of mine,” As Lucianus continued his chant, he caressed Setsura’s petite lips gently and his body began to glow in an angelic-like warm aura.

“O Holy Spirit, whoso hath takeneth my vow, I beseech thee: haltest her wandest in thy shade; for the love of me for this girl, run deep through my veins, and this shall live even when all falls apart,” the glow around Lucianus’s body intensified when Lucianus finished his chant and he gave Setsura a mournful smile.

Slowly, his face approached Setsura, closing the gap between his and her lips.

“I love you… Setsura…”

Upon finishing his words, Lucianus body was immediately scattered into thousands red feathers, falling off to the ground like a rain of confetti.

Within split seconds, Setsura jolted up from the ground, all her body wounds were completely healed without even leaving a single scar. She had never felt this alive before.

Realising the ultimate sacrifice that Lucianus has made to bring her back to life, Setsura held on to one of the red feathers and wept dreadfully.

“Luci! Luci!!” She continued to scream like a mad woman for the person who she loved the most in her entire life.
